Urbig Unyielding, Olise Magical: FC Bayern Secures Narrow Victory — VfL Wolfsburg Remains in Suspense

Following their Champions League elimination, Bayern showed vulnerability for the first half in Wolfsburg, but Urbig kept a clean sheet. The champions then stepped up their game, sending the Wolves into a nail-biting finale on the last matchday.

Bayern Munich, after missing out on the Champions League final, delivered the expected response and sent VfL Wolfsburg into the Bundesliga’s major relegation showdown with a 1-0 victory. Thanks to a dream goal from Michael Olise, Vincent Kompany’s team defeated the relegation-threatened Wolves in a hard-fought match. For Wolfsburg, everything now hinges on their final game of the season against FC St. Pauli.

With St. Pauli also losing 2-1 at RB Leipzig in the afternoon, the relegation battle intensifies, culminating in a direct duel between the two relegation candidates on the 34th matchday at the Millerntor Stadium. Wolfsburg and St. Pauli both stand at 26 points, and 1. FC Heidenheim can also draw level with a victory against 1. FC Köln on Sunday.

Harry Kane Misses First Bundesliga Penalty

After their disappointing Champions League semi-final exit against Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern struggled for a long time but ultimately showed composure and gained momentum for the final highlight of their season: the DFB-Pokal final on May 23rd against VfB Stuttgart.

In their final home game against Köln next Saturday, Bayern will be presented with the championship shield, having already secured the title on the 30th matchday.

Harry Kane missed a penalty in the 36th minute after a foul on Olise, marking his first-ever penalty miss in the Bundesliga. Olise then put his team ahead in the 56th minute.

Wolfsburg the Better Team in the First Half

The first dangerous chance of the game belonged to the hosts: Joakim Maehle crossed into the opponent’s goal in the 7th minute, where Vinicius Souza headed from close range. However, Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig was also in position with his head to make the save.

Wolfsburg showed significant offensive improvement. The Lower Saxony team repeatedly managed to bypass Bayern’s defensive line, while Munich, despite having a clear advantage in possession in the opening fifteen minutes, rarely threatened the opponent’s penalty area.

It wasn’t until a long-range shot from Tom Bischof from about 20 meters that Kamil Grabara was first tested, with the ball hitting the crossbar. Whenever Wolfsburg, who had to do without Mohamed Amoura and Kevin Paredes for ‘disciplinary reasons’, won the ball, they switched play with lightning speed.

This was evident when Patrik Wimmer headed the ball towards Urbig in the 28th minute, and Leon Goretzka, who had just been painfully hit in the head, nearly scored an own goal. During this phase, the Wolves were clearly the superior team.

Mattias Svanberg Misses a Big Equalizer for the Wolves

It was only a foul by Konstantinos Koulierakis on Olise in the penalty area that brought Bayern back into the game. However, Kane’s penalty in the 36th minute went wide to the right of the goal, marking his first Bundesliga penalty miss. After a strong first half, the Wolfsburg crowd bid their team farewell with applause.

The first good chance of the second half fell to Jamal Musiala in the 48th minute, but Grabara kept his team in the game. Then, it was once again the individual brilliance of Olise: from the right side, he curled a shot beautifully into the left corner, leaving Grabara no chance this time.

In the second half, the visitors were significantly more dominant and no longer allowed the Wolves the space they had granted them in the first half. Mattias Svanberg hit the post for Wolfsburg in the 89th minute.
