Werder Bremen’s precarious position in the Bundesliga relegation battle continues, as they suffered a 0-1 defeat against TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday afternoon, preventing them from fully securing their survival with just one game left in the season.
Theoretically, Bremen could still fall back to the 16th relegation playoff spot on the final matchday, but this scenario would only occur if Wolfsburg manages to win against champions Bayern Munich on Saturday evening.
Bazoumana Toure scored the decisive goal for Hoffenheim in the 26th minute. Werder Bremen was forced to play with a man down from the 5th minute onwards after a reckless challenge by Yukinari Sugawara resulted in a red card. With this home victory, TSG Hoffenheim keeps their chances of qualifying for the Champions League alive. However, due to Stuttgart’s win against Leverkusen, Hoffenheim’s Champions League aspirations on the upcoming Saturday in Mönchengladbach will also depend on the result of VfB, who are level on points but have a significantly better goal difference.
Werder’s coach Daniel Thioune had previously emphasized his desire to secure their league status through their own performance. «That is very important to me,» said the 51-year-old, who took over coaching duties in Bremen in February. «That was the mandate given to me.» However, their plans were immediately put under pressure: Sugawara’s studs-up challenge into Toure’s calf led to a justified red card after a VAR review by referee Sören Storks.
Hoffenheim Scores Following a Quick Corner Routine
Playing with ten men, Werder Bremen retreated deep into their own half when Hoffenheim had possession, making it difficult for the TSG to create chances initially. By the middle of the first half, the home team had over 60 percent of the ball but appeared nervous in their attacking plays. It was a lapse in concentration from Werder that led to Hoffenheim’s lead: during a quickly taken TSG corner, Werder’s defense was caught off guard, and Toure capitalized on the opportunity.
In front of 28,128 spectators, the visitors still attempted to pose a threat, but Justin Njinmah’s long-range effort went significantly over the crossbar (30th minute). Werder, with nine outfield players, held their own reasonably well, and Hoffenheim failed to create further clear-cut chances before halftime.
The away team remained active at the start of the second half and created several opportunities, with Njinmah missing the best chance in the 50th minute. However, Werder was fortunate when Wouter Burger’s cross struck the post (61st minute). The match became largely defined by tension, with both teams waiting for their decisive opportunity.
