"Er sollte weg, ohne Wenn und Aber": BVB-Präsident Hans-Joachim Watzke redet Tacheles

BVB-Präsident Hans-Joachim Watzke hat klar zum Rücktritt von FIFA-Präsident Gianni Infantino aufgerufen.

"Er sollte weg, ohne Wenn und Aber", erklärte der Präsident des BVB und des Ligaverbandes am Donnerstag beim 'Big Bang KI Festival' in Berlin. Watzke nannte drei Punkte, die für ihn zu weit gingen.

Watzkes Haltung ist nun deutlich schärfer als noch in der Vorwoche, als er im Deutschlandfunk Infantinos freiwilligen Rückzug zumindest für denkbar hielt. Nach der Sitzung des UEFA-Exekutivkomitees am Dienstag in Thessaloniki ist für den DFB-Vizepräsidenten klar: Der Schweizer ist nicht mehr zu halten.

Er führte drei Ereignisse an, die sein Fass zum Überlaufen brachten. Zuerst bemängelte er die Verleihung des FIFA-Friedenspreises an US-Präsident Donald Trump während der Auslosung der Weltmeisterschaft 2026. Watzke bezeichnete dies als "Wahnsinn", da Infantino die Auszeichnung selbst geschaffen und entschieden habe.

Weiterhin missbilligte Watzke die sogenannte "Causa Balogun". Während der WM wurde die Sperre des US-Nationalspielers Folarin Balogun für das Achtelfinale gegen Belgien nach einer Intervention Trumps aufgehoben. "Das kann nicht sein, dass, wenn da einer vom Platz fliegt, der Staatspräsident den Fifa-Präsidenten anruft, und erstaunlicherweise wird das Ding auch sofort einkassiert", so Watzke, der auch dies als "Wahnsinn" bezeichnete.

Zusätzlich ärgerten den langjährigen Geschäftsführer von Borussia Dortmund Infantinos zwischenzeitlich eingestellte Pläne zum Verkauf von Anteilen an der Weltmeisterschaft an US-Investoren. Er fand die Pläne "völlig wahnsinnig", da weder Vizepräsidenten noch das FIFA-Council informiert waren.

Watzke sah zudem keinen Grund für eine Veräußerung von Anteilen am Kerngeschäft der FIFA. "Das läuft wie geschnitten Brot. Warum willst du da Investoren? Die Fifa sitzt auf einem riesigen Geldberg, der eigentlich uns gehört, den Nationalverbänden. Und wofür dann Investoren? Warum soll ich denen 20, 30 Prozent mitgeben, wenn das Ding läuft?"

Die Pläne, die etwa 20 Milliarden US-Dollar in die FIFA-Kassen spülen sollten, scheiterten nach starker Kritik und Boykott-Drohungen mehrerer Verbände, darunter die UEFA.

Gianni Infantino ist seit 2016 im Amt. Seine aktuelle Amtszeit endet 2027. Er hat bereits angekündigt, erneut zur Wahl antreten zu wollen. Die UEFA hat im Falle einer erneuten Kandidatur Infantinos angekündigt, einen Gegenkandidaten aufzustellen, was bis Mitte November geschehen soll.

Hans-Joachim Watzke (67), President of Borussia Dortmund and the German Football League, has unequivocally called for the end of Gianni Infantino's (56) presidency at the world football governing body, FIFA.

"He should go, without ifs or buts," Watzke stated on Thursday at the 'Big Bang KI Festival' in Berlin. He cited three actions by the Swiss that he deemed "too much."

Watzke's stance was notably firmer than the previous week, when he suggested in an interview with Deutschlandfunk that Infantino's voluntary withdrawal was "at least conceivable." Following the UEFA Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday in Thessaloniki, it appears clear to the DFB Vice President that the Swiss cannot remain in his position.

He detailed the three "drops" that caused Infantino's situation to become untenable for him. It began with the FIFA award he presented to US President Donald Trump during the draw for the 2026 World Cup finals. Watzke called this award creation and decision "insane" in itself.

Watzke was also displeased with the "Balogun case." During the World Cup, the suspension of US national team forward Folarin Balogun for the Round of 16 match against Belgium, due to a red card, was rescinded following Trump's intervention. "It cannot be that if someone gets sent off, the President calls the FIFA President, and astonishingly, the matter is immediately overturned," Watzke remarked, again calling it "insane."

Furthermore, the long-time CEO of Borussia Dortmund was angered by Infantino's now-abandoned plans to sell shares in the World Cup to US investors. He described these plans as "completely insane," noting that "no one knows about it, his vice presidents at FIFA knew nothing, the Council knew nothing."

Watzke also argued there was no reason to sell stakes in FIFA's flagship event. "It's running like clockwork. Why do you want investors? FIFA sits on a huge pile of money that actually belongs to us, the national associations. And why investors for that? Why should I give them 20, 30 percent when it's running so well?"

The plans, which were expected to bring approximately $20 billion into FIFA's coffers, ultimately failed after a storm of outrage and boycott threats from several associations, including UEFA.

Infantino has been in office since 2016, with his current term ending in 2027. However, he has already announced and reiterated his intention to seek re-election. UEFA, in turn, has declared its intention to put forward a rival candidate if Infantino runs again, with this decision expected by mid-November.
