Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac (54) dreams of winning major titles like the championship and the Champions League with the traditional club.
«BVB is a big club, and as a big club and an ambitious coach, you naturally want to win titles and bring this stadium, this region to ecstasy,» Kovac told Sport Bild.
Kovac recalled the great BVB successes under legendary coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, who won the German championship twice and the Champions League with the club between 1991 and 1997. «What Ottmar achieved here is definitely an incentive for me to repeat,» he said.
Kovac: Hitzfeld «a great person and professional»
Hitzfeld, who was once his coach at Bayern Munich, is «a great person and professional» who «is still available to me today if I need advice,» Kovac said. «What I like about him, independent of titles, is that he has remained a normal person. He always told me his opinion openly to my face. Approachable, authentic, honest, with great empathy and a great aura. He could manage people like no other, knowing when to look away and when to tighten the reins.»
Dortmund last won a major title with the DFB-Pokal victory in 2021, and their last championship was in 2012. The club’s greatest historical achievement is the triumph in the Champions League in 1997.
