Memphis Grizzlies Mourn NBA Player Brandon Clarke’s Passing at 29

The Memphis Grizzlies organization has confirmed the heartbreaking news of the death of their player, Brandon Clarke, who passed away at the young age of 29. The club shared the somber announcement on Tuesday, but no further details regarding the cause of death were immediately provided. This season, Clarke had a limited presence on the court, participating in only two NBA games due to ongoing knee and hip injuries.

«Our hearts are broken by the tragic loss,» the Grizzlies stated on X (formerly Twitter). «Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the Grizzlies and the entire community will never be forgotten. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.»

Clarke was originally selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft before being traded to Memphis. He played for the Grizzlies and signed a four-year contract extension in October 2022, valued at $52 million. In March 2023, Clarke suffered a torn Achilles tendon but demonstrated remarkable determination in his recovery efforts, only to be sidelined again by injuries.

NBA Commissioner Silver Also Expresses Grief Over Clarke’s Early Demise

Just six weeks prior to his passing, Clarke had been arrested in Arkansas on charges of drug possession and evading law enforcement at high speed.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver shared his sorrow, saying, «As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and a player who led with immense passion and a fighting spirit. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Brandon’s family, his friends, and the entire Grizzlies organization.»
