FC Bayern: Hoeneß’s Interview Irritates Konrad Laimer, Contract Talks in Jeopardy

Statements made by Uli Hoeneß in an interview have reportedly not sat well with Konrad Laimer, according to Sport Bild. The comments, made before Bayern Munich’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain, are said to have undermined Laimer’s perceived value and could lead to a stalemate in his contract negotiations.

The Austrian international is reportedly experiencing significant irritation on his side due to the remarks. Hoeneß, speaking to DAZN, made his stance clear on the financial limits for Laimer’s potential contract extension (his current contract runs until 2027). While praising the tireless Austrian, Hoeneß added, «Konny is a player I value highly. He is extremely important for the team, as well as for the club’s public image. He works incredibly hard for the team. But he’s just not Maradona.»

Hoeneß Compares Laimer to Harry Kane

Hoeneß further drew a parallel to superstar Harry Kane to emphasize the salary hierarchy. He stated that while Laimer’s sporting and economic worth is high, he is «just not Harry Kane.»

This public downplaying is likely a strategic move by Bayern bosses. Following expensive deals for Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, and Alphonso Davies, the club reportedly wants to set a precedent. The message is that FC Bayern will no longer dictate terms solely to retain key players.

Bayern’s New Salary Threshold: €20 Million?

Behind the scenes, the gap in expectations appears wider than previously assumed. While Sky previously reported Laimer was seeking around €15 million per year (up from his current approximately €10 million including bonuses), even more extreme figures are now emerging. According to the report, the €15 million mark is no longer sufficient for Laimer’s camp. Including bonuses and a signing fee, the total package demanded could reach up to €20 million – a salary level typically reserved for absolute difference-makers.

Hoeneß clarified his position: «Very few clubs in Europe can even offer what he is currently earning. I don’t know what Max and Christoph have specifically offered him, but it certainly won’t have been what his advisors demanded at the beginning.»

Laimer: From Fill-in to Indispensable

Sportingly, Laimer has proven his worth under coach Vincent Kompany. Having arrived on a free transfer from Leipzig in the summer of 2023 as a backup for the midfield, he has developed into an indispensable all-around defensive player. Whether playing right-back or on the left, Laimer’s work rate and intensity are consistently impressive.

However, his sporting value and financial demands are currently far apart at Säbener Straße. Negotiations have stalled, and an agreement seems distant.
