Loyalty to Co-Trainer Leads to Dismissal: Former Bundesliga Coach Dino Toppmöller Sacked After Just Six Games
First title, then separation: Coach Dino Toppmöller is already history at French top-flight club RC Lens after only three months.
The vice-champion confirmed the 'amicable' separation on Tuesday evening, indirectly revealing its cause. Media reports suggest a dispute between the club's management and Toppmöller concerning his co-trainer and confidant, Nelson Morgado.
"Following numerous discussions about the team's structure, working methods, and coaching staff organization, the club informed its coach of the intention to restructure the staff," a club statement read. "As Dino Toppmöller could not support these structural changes, the club made the responsible decision to end his tenure, along with that of his two assistants."
Simultaneously, Racing Club acknowledged Toppmöller's "sincere human qualities and consistently classy demeanor." He was reportedly even prepared to "waive a significant portion of his contractually agreed severance pay."
Co-trainer Yannick Cahuzac will take over at least for the upcoming match on Friday evening against AS Monaco (8:45 PM). Toppmöller, former coach of Eintracht Frankfurt, had taken over Lens in the summer after an exceptional season and immediately led them to a title in his first competitive match, winning the French Super Cup against the star-studded Paris Saint-Germain.
Now, after six competitive games, including a tense 3-2 opening win in the Champions League against Slavia Prague, it's over. The management was reportedly satisfied with the 45-year-old's sporting performance, despite the team sitting in tenth place in the league after four games, partly due to significant injury concerns.
