Pape Matar Sarr's true Juventus experience can now begin after his first minutes for the club. The Senegalese midfielder appeared in the 3-2 loss to Sassuolo, substituting Koopmeiners in the 71st minute. The final score and a chaotic conclusion at the Mapei Stadium overshadowed his debut. However, for coach Luciano Spalletti, Sarr's return is significant given the upcoming European match against NEC Nijmegen and the subsequent league fixture with Atalanta. With Locatelli and Khéphren Thuram sidelined long-term, the new signing is set to quickly earn a role in the team's rotation.
Debut in a Difficult Match
Sarr entered the field with Juventus already trailing and the team increasingly exposed. This was not an ideal environment to immediately showcase his abilities. The Senegalese player attempted to bring energy and dynamism but found a game already devoid of balance. Juventus attacked with many players, leaving significant space for Sassuolo, which ultimately led to Adzic's winning goal in the 94th minute.
His initial minutes were primarily focused on regaining match fitness. Sarr had been working separately to recover from an adductor issue that delayed his integration after his transfer from Tottenham.
Spalletti Needs His Qualities
Sarr offers Juventus different qualities compared to Douglas Luiz and Koopmeiners. Luiz primarily acts as an organizer, while Koopmeiners tends to push forward into attacking midfield roles. Sarr can provide defensive coverage, drive with the ball, and cover large areas quickly. These traits could benefit a team that appeared too vulnerable in transitions against Sassuolo.
Sarr can support the press, make runs without the ball, and track back during opposition counter-attacks. His dynamism becomes particularly valuable when Spalletti opts for a formation with four attackers.
Emergencies Increase Responsibilities
Locatelli's extended absence has deprived Juventus of their primary tempo-setter and defensive anchor. Thuram will also be out for several months, further limiting midfield options.
Against Sassuolo, Spalletti again fielded Douglas Luiz and Koopmeiners. The partnership, however, struggled to sustain the press and protect the defense, especially as the match wore on.
McKennie is available for the NEC match but is expected to start on the bench. Sarr could therefore become a genuine starter or significantly increase his playing time in the second half. The demanding schedule means the same midfielders cannot be relied upon constantly. Rotations are no longer an option; they are a necessity.
Opportunity Against Nijmegen
His Europa League debut could accelerate his integration process. Spalletti is considering tactical adjustments, including a potential return to a 3-4-2-1 formation to provide the team with more defensive security. In this system, Sarr could play alongside Douglas Luiz, offering both energy and cover. Another possibility is deploying the Senegalese player in the second half, when the game's tempo might create more openings for his runs.
His physical condition is not yet optimal, and the staff will avoid rushing his recovery. However, after his brief appearance in Reggio Emilia, Sarr is ready for more significant minutes.
Experience Gained at a High Level
Despite his youth, Sarr should not be considered inexperienced. He joins Juventus with over a hundred Premier League appearances and a Europa League title won with Tottenham. He understands the rhythm of international competitions and the pressure of crucial matches. This background should allow him to adapt more quickly than a typical new signing.
His main challenge has so far been physical. Having overcome the muscle issue, the Senegalese player must rapidly learn Spalletti's tactical demands and build chemistry with his new teammates.
