Schock vor Kader-Nominierung beim DFB! Bittere Hiobsbotschaft durchkreuzt wohl die Pläne von Jürgen Klopp
Assan Ouedraogo from RB Leipzig might have to rest for weeks again. The attacker apparently suffered another shoulder injury during the 5-0 win against HSV.
Just 35 minutes into the Bundesliga match between Leipzig and Hamburg, Ouedraogo remained on the ground after a challenge with HSV player Albert Grönbæk. While a diagnosis is pending, the visuals told a clear story: the 20-year-old midfielder immediately clutched his shoulder and had to be substituted before halftime.
This comes at a particularly unfortunate time for the talented player, threatening another forced break. Jürgen Klopp's first squad nomination is scheduled for Thursday. The new national coach is calling up players for the Nations League matches, but will likely have to do without the Leipzig player. For the youngster, this is another setback in a career already plagued by bad luck.
His summer preparation was far from optimal. An ankle injury to his right shoulder in August already sidelined him for weeks.
Assan Ouedraogo made his first start against HSV
The match against a helpless HSV marked the long-awaited first start of the season in the Bundesliga for the 20-year-old. Previously, Ouedraogo had only featured as a substitute during the week in the Champions League against Como 1907 (1-4).
The abrupt end to his promising start is causing concern for those at Leipzig. RB head coach Martin Demichelis hinted after the dominant win against the Hamburg team that the injury might be to the same spot.
"It doesn't look good," he said. "He was ready to play. We waited until he was healthy."
Assan Ouedraogo: "Haven't seen such a good number eight in a long time"
The sporting appreciation for the former Schalke player remains high among the Saxons. Demichelis emphasized his protégé's abilities: "We need him. He is a brutal talent, for Germany and for our club." The RB coach noted he "hasn't seen such a good number eight in this position with such talent in a long time."
However, the midfielder's injury record is becoming a growing concern. Since his move from FC Schalke 04 to RB Leipzig two years ago, repeated injuries have consistently disrupted Ouedraogo's rhythm. He has only managed 27 competitive matches for RB so far. His record of four goals and four assists hints at his potential.
His career with the German national team has also been mixed. Under Klopp's predecessor, Julian Nagelsmann, the Leipzig player was added to the German World Cup squad in the summer after Bayern talent Lennart Karl was injured during preparation. He did not get to play in the tournament in North America. To date, Ouedraogo has one cap for the national team, scoring a goal in his debut.
