Germany Draws Greece: Player Ratings and Match Analysis
The German national team concluded its international break with a 0-0 draw against Greece in Thessaloniki. Here’s a look at the DFB players' individual performances.
Jürgen Klopp’s side controlled the first half but lacked finishing power. Jonathan Burkardt’s would-be opener was disallowed due to a handball by Tom Bischof after VAR review (32nd minute). The second half saw a more balanced game, remaining goalless.
Germany’s next match is away against Serbia on November 13th, followed by a home game against the Netherlands on November 16th in Berlin to wrap up the Nations League group stage. The DFB-Team currently sits third in Group B with five points after four games. The top two teams advance to the quarterfinals in March.
DFB Team Player Ratings vs. Greece: Jonas Urbig
After giving Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Alexander Nübel chances, Klopp handed Urbig his second start. He made a spectacular save on Georgios Masouras’ header within two minutes. He faced little else and handled his duties confidently. Rating: 2.5.
DFB Team Player Ratings vs. Greece: Philipp Treu
Klopp’s discovery from SC Freiburg started for the third time this international break and performed solidly. Treu received a yellow card in the second half and shot over the bar from close range shortly before the end. Rating: 3.
DFB Team Player Ratings vs. Greece: Malick Thiaw
Similar to the Serbia match, Thiaw contributed to Germany’s build-up play with many vertical passes. He also made the most clearances for the DFB-Team. Rating: 2.5.
DFB Team Player Ratings vs. Greece: Waldemar Anton
Defended reliably alongside Thiaw and added an attacking threat with a long-range shot in the 20th minute. Anton was booked for a hard foul late in the first half. Rating: 3.
DFB Team Player Ratings vs. Greece: David Raum
Replaced Maximilian Mittelstädt at left-back and performed similarly well. Raum’s powerful direct shot after a creative free-kick was saved by Greek goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis in the 25th minute. Rating: 3.
DFB Team Player Ratings vs. Greece: Tom Bischof
The midfield impressed against Serbia, and Klopp kept the same lineup. The trio again showed promise but lacked overall impact. Bischof initiated the disallowed goal with a nice switch of play, but his touch was ruled a handball after VAR intervention. Rating: 3.
DFB Team Player Ratings vs. Greece: Aleksandar Pavlovic
Praised by Klopp as the ‘engine room,’ Pavlovic delivered another dominant performance with intelligent passing. Rating: 3.
DFB Team Player Ratings vs. Greece: Florian Wirtz
Captained the DFB-Team for the first time in his 48th international appearance. Wirtz consistently displayed his technical skill, including a fine solo run that led to a blocked shot (8th minute). He also showed strong commitment to pressing. Rating: 2.5.
DFB Team Player Ratings vs. Greece: Lennart Karl
Started on the right wing instead of his Bayern colleague Serge Gnabry. He was often on the ball but lacked consistency and had several unnecessary turnovers. Karl tracked back well during a dangerous Greek attack in the 50th minute. Rating: 3.5.
DFB Team Player Ratings vs. Greece: Jonathan Burkardt
After two quiet substitute appearances, Burkardt got his first start under Klopp but became the main unlucky player. He unintentionally blocked a dangerous header from his teammate Wirtz (20th minute). Later, his potential first international goal was disallowed due to Bischof's handball after VAR review (32nd minute). Aside from these incidents, he was largely quiet. Rating: 4.
DFB Team Player Ratings vs. Greece: Derry Scherhant
Like against Serbia, Scherhant was a constant nuisance on the left wing against Greece. He repeatedly initiated bold dribbles and was surprisingly successful. Germany’s best outfield player showed a significant weakness: his numerous crosses and shots often lacked precision, with the exception of his delivery before Burkardt’s disallowed goal. Scherhant triggered a minor scuffle with a rough body check in the 54th minute. He moved to the right side after El Mala came on. Rating: 2.5.
DFB Team Player Ratings vs. Greece: Substitutes
Nick Woltemade: Came on for Burkardt in the 63rd minute. Involved in a good attack shortly after his introduction, but Scherhant ultimately shot wide. Rating: 3.5.
Said El Mala: Replaced Karl in the 63rd minute but remained largely ineffective. Rating: 4.
Mika Baur: Substituted Bischof in the 83rd minute. No rating.
Bambase Conte: Came on for Scherhant. No rating.
