Jorge Jesus: Cristiano Ronaldo's National Team Return Depends on Him
Portugal's coach Jorge Jesus has signaled that Cristiano Ronaldo could return to the national team if he wishes.
“If he wants to, he will return to the national team… we can talk about it before the next squad announcement, but the decision rests with Cris,” Jesus stated after Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory against Norway, which secured their place in the quarterfinals.
Ronaldo had abruptly left the national team’s training camp in Denmark earlier that week, suggesting the end of his international career. This followed Jesus’s decision to bench him, as had happened in the previous match. For Portugal's record goalscorer, this was too much, and he departed by private jet to Madrid in the middle of the night. “For me, Cris is a player who can be called up for the next squad, provided he is playing for Al-Nassr,” Jesus emphasized on Sunday.
Portugal secured victories in Denmark (4-2) and against Erling Haaland's Norway even without the 41-year-old. Ronaldo has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for the national team. He captained his country to their Euro 2016 title.
