Liverpool's 'Galacticos' Era Failure at Anfield: Scathing Verdict on the Club

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has delivered a harsh assessment of his club's disappointing start to the season.

The former Reds captain doesn't blame new coach Andoni Iraola but points to what he sees as a flawed transfer strategy over recent years. Carragher draws a parallel to Real Madrid's ultimately unsuccessful "Galacticos" era in the 2000s, when the Spanish giants assembled a team of superstars like Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Luis Figo, and David Beckham, generating immense expectations that weren't consistently met.

"The new manager has to be diplomatic about the fallout from a Liverpool transfer policy that has taken the club down a risky and unfamiliar road that is more akin to Real Madrid's. As things stand, we are in the middle of a failed 'Galacticos' era at Anfield," the 48-year-old wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

The Englishman specifically references the substantial investments made in recent transfer windows. In the summer of 2025 alone, Liverpool spent nearly €500 million on new players. Notable signings included Alexander Isak (€145 million), Florian Wirtz (€125 million), and Hugo Ekitike (€95 million). Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong were also acquired for over €40 million each. Liverpool's 2025 transfer window was the second most expensive in football history; only Manchester City spent more in 2026.

Liverpool continued its aggressive spending in the summer of 2026. Bradley Barcola transferred from Paris Saint-Germain to Anfield for around €120 million. Additionally, the Reds signed Jeremy Jacquet from Stade Rennes for €63 million and Victor Munoz for another €40 million.

For Carragher, this transfer spree has a striking consequence. "An incredible fact, considering how much has already been invested. The Basque coach is the first at Liverpool to work with new signings worth over £700 million (an equivalent of €815 million) – and can justifiably feel he's been dealt a bad hand," he explained.

How Did FC Liverpool Start the New Season?

FC Liverpool has had a slow start to the young season. While the Reds remain undefeated in their six competitive matches so far, their Premier League performance has been underwhelming. After four games, they have only secured one win and three draws, placing them eighth in the league.

Looking back at the previous season offers little cause for celebration. Liverpool finished without a trophy and narrowly qualified for the Champions League as fifth-place finishers. Currently, they would miss out on Champions League qualification based on their league position. However, the season is still long.

The Reds have their next opportunity to improve their standing on Sunday when they face AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League.
