Lamine Yamal Shatters 70-Year Record at Wembley; Spain Edges England in Nations League Thriller

Lamine Yamal achieved a historic goal in Spain's Nations League match against England at Wembley on Saturday evening.

The FC Barcelona attacker gave the world champions the lead in the 2nd minute. According to Opta, this marks the earliest goal conceded by England at the prestigious national stadium in almost 70 years.

In England's entire international history at Wembley, only twice has a goal been scored even earlier: Hungary netted in the 1st minute in 1953, and Scotland achieved the same feat 69 years ago in 1957.

Yamal capitalized on a lapse in concentration from England's center-back Marc Guehi. As the last defender, Guehi carelessly lost the ball to the Barcelona star. Yamal then decisively moved into the box and, despite Guehi's pressure, coolly finished past England keeper James Trafford to put Spain ahead.

England recovered and allowed several more opportunities for the visitors, with Ferran Torres missing the best chance in the 27th minute. However, less than fifteen minutes later, the Three Lions suddenly found themselves leading. Anthony Gordon equalized in the 36th minute, and Bayern star Harry Kane then provided England with a 2-1 advantage going into halftime in the 40th minute.

A controversial penalty, awarded after a VAR review in England's favor, gave Kane the chance to extend the hosts' lead shortly after the restart. The usually reliable penalty taker, however, struck the crossbar, slipping during his shot.

This kept England's lead narrow. The advantage disappeared around the hour mark when Alex Baena, a substitute, leveled the score at 2-2 from Dani Olmo's setup. About fifteen minutes later, Spain completed the turnaround. Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal chipped keeper Trafford with finesse for the final 3-2 scoreline.

For Yamal, this rapid start to the match continued his excellent form for his club. In eight competitive appearances for Barcelona in the 2026/27 season, the 19-year-old has already recorded eight goals and six assists. This was his eighth goal in 34 international caps for Spain.

The ultimate goal for La Furia Roja is to emulate the previous golden generation of Xavi, Andres Iniesta, and their contemporaries, who won three major tournaments consecutively between 2008 and 2012 (Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, Euro 2012). Yamal and his teammates could achieve a similar feat in the upcoming European Championship, hosted in Great Britain and Ireland in 2028, following a potential Euro 2024 title and World Cup 2026 victory.
