FC Bayern Opens EuroLeague Season with Thrilling Victory Over Hapoel Tel Aviv
FC Bayern Munich's basketball team made a strong opening to their EuroLeague campaign.
The team coached by Anton Gavel defeated Israeli vice-champions Hapoel Tel Aviv 86-84 (44-39) in Sofia, Bulgaria, where Hapoel plays its home games. However, Bayern nearly squandered a significant lead in the final quarter, experiencing a substantial lapse in play.
At one point in the last period, Bayern held an 18-point advantage. They then lost their rhythm, allowing Tel Aviv to take control and even the score. Hapoel led 84-83 with just 34 seconds remaining before World and European Champion Johannes Voigtmann sank the decisive three-pointer.
Andreas Obst was the top scorer for Bayern with 19 points. Dan Oturu scored 20 points for Tel Aviv. In their second of 38 regular-season games, Bayern faces fellow title contender Fenerbahce Istanbul next Tuesday.
