DFB Youngster Reportedly on the Verge of a Sensational Bundesliga Transfer for Over 20 Million Euros

Following their relegation, VfL Wolfsburg is anticipating a substantial exodus of players. A particularly promising young German forward is reportedly in high demand.

According to reports from the kicker, even internationally recognized clubs are expressing interest in Dzenan Pejcinovic. The specialized publication specifically mentions Benfica Lisbon. However, the 21-year-old German U21 international is said to be leaning towards staying in the Bundesliga.

SC Freiburg, Bayer Leverkusen, and Eintracht Frankfurt are reportedly particularly interested in a transfer for Pejcinovic. The Wolves are aware that one of their few bright spots has attracted considerable attention and might consider selling him for an ‘extraordinary offer.’ Nevertheless, any club looking to acquire Pejcinovic would need to present an offer ‘well over 20 million Euros’ to the club.

The prospect of major clubs vying for his signature is not new to the 21-year-old. Manchester City was reportedly interested in the young striker’s services two years ago, with Pep Guardiola himself said to be a driving force behind the pursuit. At the time, Pejcinovic had an impressive record for VfL’s U19s, scoring 31 goals in 21 games, and had also excelled in Germany’s youth national teams (38 goals in 38 appearances from U16 to U19).

However, Pejcinovic suffered a significant setback: as he was promoted to the first team at the end of the season, he broke his metatarsal and was sidelined for months. This was followed by a decent loan spell at then-ambitious second-division club Fortuna Düsseldorf, which was unfortunately once again marred by injuries.

Dzenan Pejcinovic Emerges as a Key Beneficiary of Wolfsburg’s Relegation Season

In his very first game back after recovering from his metatarsal fracture, he scored the equalizer in Ulm. However, after his second game for Fortuna, he suffered a meniscus injury while with the U20 national team and had to take another month-long break. Upon his return, he established himself as a valuable impact substitute or partnered with Dawid Kownacki upfront, scoring four goals in 17 appearances. But then he broke his metatarsal again, rendering him unavailable for Düsseldorf in the final eight games of their promotion push.

Back in Wolfsburg, he remained injury-free and had a strong first full Bundesliga season. Although his breakthrough didn’t happen until the final matchday before the winter break, it was a spectacular one. Pejcinovic scored three goals against SC Freiburg and added further goals against FC Bayern and St. Pauli. He had also earned a call-up to the German U21 squad, scoring on his debut in September. He featured in six out of seven European Championship qualifiers but currently plays second fiddle to Nicolo Tresoldi under coach Antonio Di Salvo.

He concluded the season with VfL having scored twelve goals in 34 competitive appearances. He was also on target in the second leg of the relegation playoff against SC Paderborn, scoring the early 1-0 lead for the Wolves. However, this was followed by an early and controversially discussed red card for Joakim Maehle, ultimately leading to Wolfsburg’s relegation.
