The DFB-Pokal semifinals are set to take place this week. However, there’s a question on many minds: why aren’t matches involving FC Bayern Munich or VfB Stuttgart being played on Tuesday, as is often customary? SPOX provides the clarification.
Neither the semifinal clash between FC Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen nor the encounter between VfB Stuttgart and SC Freiburg will be held on Tuesday, April 21st. Instead, these crucial matches are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
Here’s why the schedule is unusual, as explained by SPOX.
DFB-Pokal Today Live: Why Aren’t FC Bayern Munich or VfB Stuttgart Playing in the Semifinals on Tuesday?
The first DFB-Pokal semifinal of this season will occur on Wednesday, April 22nd, with FC Bayern Munich visiting Bayer Leverkusen. The following day, April 23rd, VfB Stuttgart will face SC Freiburg. Both games are scheduled to kick off at 8:45 PM.
This marks only the second time in this millennium that no semifinal matches are held on a Tuesday; the last instance was during the 2020/21 COVID-19 season when the finalists were determined on a Friday and Saturday.
The reason behind this scheduling quirk is a simple rule. According to regulations, there must be a two-day rest period between matches. This rule made Tuesday unsuitable for three of the semifinalists at the time the Bundesliga schedule was finalized. Both VfB Stuttgart and SC Freiburg were still involved in the Europa League, necessitating consideration for potential Thursday matches for both teams. Consequently, only a Sunday fixture was feasible for these two clubs.
As VfB Stuttgart lost to Bayern (2-4), Bayern, who are no longer competing in European competitions, also could not play against Leverkusen on a Tuesday. Freiburg, on the other hand, won their match against 1. FC Heidenheim 2-1.
