Concrete discussions are reportedly underway between Real Madrid and former star Toni Kroos regarding his return to the royal club.
This is according to a report by The Athletic. Naturally, this is not about a playing comeback: Kroos ended his career after the 2024 European Championship, having consistently stated it was a well-considered decision. Following the now 36-year-old’s retirement from playing, Real Madrid went trophyless in the 2024/25 season under coach Carlo Ancelotti. A similar fate looms this current season, as coaches Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa have not been able to turn the tide in the Spanish capital.
For Kroos, Real Madrid is reportedly considering a path similar to that of Zinedine Zidane: The former World Player of the Year was also integrated into the club after his playing career and gradually developed into a star coach, winning the Champions League with the team in both of his stints at the Bernabeu.
‘Kroos could start in a similar advisory role like the Frenchman and also represent the club at official events,’ writes the portal. A role within the team’s environment is also conceivable, as is a development towards coaching, mirroring Zidane’s path.
Real Madrid Aims to Benefit from Kroos’ Experience
The Madrid giants are reportedly keen to leverage Kroos’ experience and knowledge. Santiago Solari currently serves as Director of Professional Football at Real, but Scouting Chief Juni Calafat and Manager Jose Angel Sanchez, who advise club president Florentino Perez on crucial transfers, hold more significant influence over decisions. Kroos could also exert influence in this area with his input, should an agreement be reached between the club and the former player.
Currently, Kroos is primarily focused on his podcast and the football school ‘Toni Kroos Academy,’ which he founded in Madrid.
