«Title Machine Turned into Failed Experiment»: England Legend Delivers Devastating Criticism of Chelsea

Former England international Jamie Carragher has spoken out about the chaos at Chelsea, offering a scathing assessment of the club’s management.

The departure of the fifth permanent manager in four years at Stamford Bridge suggests Chelsea needs a new owner as much as a new head coach, Carragher wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

The BlueCo era, which began with the arrival of American businessman and billionaire Todd Boehly in 2022, has been a «complete failure,» according to the 48-year-old. He stated, «It’s a stark example of style over substance. At the start of last season, I wrote in this column that Chelsea had transformed into the richest development club in the world. In reality, it’s even worse.»

Carragher further elaborated that the new ownership group, led by Boehly, has «turned a title machine into a failed experiment.» The recent dismissal of manager Liam Rosenior is «a symptom of BlueCo’s catastrophic mismanagement, which has destroyed a successful club.»

The Blues parted ways with Rosenior last Wednesday after their fifth consecutive league defeat. The 41-year-old had only taken over from Enzo Maresca at the London club earlier this year. Prior to that, he managed French Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg, which, like Chelsea, is part of American entrepreneur Boehly’s club network.

The English Mirror immediately speculated that Chelsea could pay Rosenior a severance package of up to £24 million, equivalent to almost 28 million euros. The manager still had six years left on his contract, which reportedly earned him £4 million per season.

Chelsea Without Success Despite Massive Investments

From a sporting perspective, the dismissal of the 41-year-old was another blow in an already disappointing season. In the Premier League, the Blues, currently eighth, are in danger of missing out on European competition entirely. In the Champions League, they were clearly outclassed by Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16.

This stands in stark contrast to record investments in recent years. In the last two transfer windows alone, Boehly and his partners poured nearly 340 million euros into the squad, yet tangible improvements have not materialized.

Since Boehly’s arrival, the balance sheet looks even more dire. A total of over 1.7 billion euros has been invested in new players since 2022, yet the only titles secured have been the less prestigious Conference League and the 2025 Club World Cup.
