Claudio Ranieri, a beloved figure at AS Roma, is leaving the club following internal friction with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. The Italian club confirmed the departure on Friday, with local media extensively reporting the split.
The decision comes after significant disagreements between Ranieri and Gasperini, reportedly stemming from Ranieri’s public comments on player selection and internal club processes.
«He guided the team through a very difficult period, and we will always be grateful for his dedication,» the club stated. «Looking ahead, our direction is clear. The club stands firm, with strong leadership and a clear vision. AS Roma will always come first.»
US Owners Reportedly Back Coach Gian Piero Gasperini
Ranieri initially took on the role of interim head coach in November 2024, seeing the team through to the end of the season. In the summer of 2025, the 74-year-old transitioned to an advisory position.
The club and its American owner, Dan Friedkin, are reportedly pleased with the team’s current sporting progress and Gasperini’s work with young players, indicating a preference for continuity.
«We have full confidence in the path ahead under Gian Piero Gasperini, with the shared goal of growing, improving, and achieving results that honor our history,» the club further commented.
Claudio Ranieri’s Third Stint Ends Ambitiously
This separation marks an unfortunate end to Ranieri’s third tenure with the club from his hometown. He previously managed AS Roma from 2009 to 2011 and again in 2019. He is widely considered a club icon in Rome.
Ranieri’s departure is expected to further solidify Coach Gasperini’s influence within the club. Meanwhile, significant questions remain regarding the club’s sporting management and the squad’s construction for the upcoming season.
The future of Sporting Director Frederic Massara is also uncertain, and discussions are ongoing about a potential return of Francesco Totti to the club in a new capacity.
