NBA Trade Shock: Kawhi Leonard's Move to Toronto Raptors Threatened by Salary Cap Scandal?

The anticipated return of Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors is now in serious doubt.

Initially, the Los Angeles Clippers and the Toronto Raptors had reached an agreement for a trade that would send the superstar back to his former team in Toronto. However, the deal is now at risk of falling through. The Clippers have informed ESPN that the trade cannot be finalized due to an ongoing NBA investigation into the salary cap scandal, which is focusing on alleged irregularities concerning Leonard and the Clippers.

"On June 30th, we reached an agreement in principle for a trade of Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors. Since then, we have been informed that the deal can only be completed if the Raptors ownership group assumes the risk of potential penalties related to Kawhi's contract, which could theoretically arise from the ongoing investigation. The investigation is continuing, and we expect the trade to be finalized after its conclusion," the Clippers stated.

In September 2025, the Clippers made headlines for alleged violations of NBA regulations, accused of circumventing the league's salary cap. The investigation centers on Leonard, who reportedly received an additional $28 million for an endorsement deal through the now-bankrupt company Aspiration, without fulfilling the agreed-upon services.

According to journalist Pablo Torre, citing legal documents, the contract with Aspiration was reportedly used to provide Leonard with additional income despite the NBA's salary cap. Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer was among the investors in Aspiration.

Salary Cap Scandal: Clippers Deny Accusations

The Clippers vehemently deny the allegations, positioning themselves as victims. "The investigation's focus is on Joe Sanberg and Aspiration. We did not channel any money to Kawhi Leonard through Aspiration. Like many other investors, financial institutions, and business partners, we have been victims of fraud initiated by Sanberg. Sanberg has been convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison for this."

The Raptors have also commented on the situation, stating they have been informed by the NBA league office that they might face consequences due to the ongoing investigation against the Clippers, should the case impact Leonard. "Given this situation, we will wait until the league's investigation is concluded." The franchise emphasized, however, that they remain very interested in "bringing Kawhi back to Toronto."

Comeback on Hold? Clippers Reportedly Wanted All-Star Brandon Ingram for Kawhi Leonard

Previously, the Clippers and Raptors had agreed on a blockbuster trade to send Leonard back to Toronto. In return, Los Angeles was reportedly set to receive All-Star Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and several draft picks: two unprotected first-round picks (2031 and 2033), a first-round pick swap right for 2027, and second-round picks for 2030 and 2033.

Leonard played for Toronto during the 2018/19 season, leading the Raptors to their first NBA championship in franchise history. In contrast, significant success has eluded the Clippers. Last season, the now 35-year-old missed the playoffs for the second time in six years after Los Angeles was eliminated in the Play-In Tournament by the Golden State Warriors.
