Novak Djokovic Faces Major Challenges from Extreme Heat, Falters in Cincinnati Comeback
Grand Slam record holder Novak Djokovic (39) has surprisingly lost his opening match at the ATP tournament in Cincinnati.
The Serbian star, making his tour return in Ohio, succumbed to Argentine opponent Thiago Agustin Tirante with a score of 6:2, 4:6, 4:6, after struggling significantly with the heat.
In his first match back on tour since his Wimbledon semi-final defeat to eventual champion Jannik Sinner, Djokovic visibly battled the temperatures, even vomiting during a medical timeout in the second set.
The world number five, in the later stages of his career, has been focusing on a select few top events on the tour for some time.
Djokovic, seeded third, had previously won the Cincinnati title in 2018, 2020, and 2023. His only previous first-round loss in Ohio was during his debut in 2005.
For him, the Masters event served as a crucial warm-up for the year's final Grand Slam tournament. Djokovic has secured four of his 24 Major titles at the US Open, which commences on August 30th.
