Arthur Fery dropped his racket and clutched his head in disbelief. The young Briton has won the 'wildcard duel' at Wimbledon, sending the home fans into raptures once again.

On Monday, the 23-year-old emerged victorious on Centre Court after a nail-biting 3-hour and 55-minute contest against Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov, with a score of 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-7). Since the beginning of the Open Era in 1968, Fery is only the fifth player to reach the quarter-finals at Church Road with a wildcard.

"I'm speechless. It's hard to describe what I felt on that tennis court just now," said Fery. "It's incredible. To win four matches and be in the quarter-finals is a dream."

Arthur Fery was born in France but grew up just ten minutes away from Wimbledon. He is the son of Loic Fery, the president of French Ligue 1 football club FC Lorient. With his first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final appearance, the world number 114 is now the sixth British player to reach the last eight at their home tournament since the advent of professional tennis in 1968.

Arthur Fery Inspires British Fans in the Presence of Roger Federer

For Dimitrov, the Wimbledon Round of 16 on Centre Court once again ended in disappointment. Last year, he had won two sets in the same round against eventual champion Jannik Sinner but suffered a partial pectoral muscle tear at 2-2 in the third set and had to retire.

In the presence of eight-time champion Roger Federer, Fery allowed the home crowd to dream after winning a set. However, Dimitrov then dominated, looking set for victory after breaking for 4-3 in the fourth set. But Fery fought back, rousing the fans from their seats with the set-tying victory, and then kept his nerve in the match tiebreak. In the quarter-finals, he now faces Italian French Open finalist Flavio Cobolli, who defeated Australian world number six Alex de Minaur 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
