Several Real Madrid players verbally attacked referee Slavko Vincic after their Champions League exit against Bayern Munich. Arda Güler was shown a red card.
The Royal’s discontent stemmed from a refereeing decision: in the 86th minute, substitute Eduardo Camavinga committed a minor foul on FCB striker Harry Kane. He then walked away from the foul with the ball in his hand and was shown a yellow card by Vincic. The Slovenian official apparently did not realize he had already shown a yellow card to the Real midfielder, resulting in a subsequent red card for Camavinga.
Even on the pitch, the Real stars surrounded the referee, who naturally did not reverse his decision. Vinicius Junior, who had previously drawn attention for an unsportsmanlike action against Joshua Kimmich, even offered sarcastic applause.
What further amplified the visitors’ anger was that they conceded two goals in ten men, which led to their elimination in Munich. Real coach Arbeloa therefore concluded: «The referee destroyed the game.» He fumed at the post-match press conference: «It’s an action that nobody understands. How you can send a player off for something like that in a game like this. […] It’s totally inexplicable, unfair. It hurts us a lot!»
Arda Güler First Scores a Brace — Then Sees Red
As the final whistle blew, some Real players confronted Vincic. Arda Güler was initially shown a yellow card by Vincic. Shortly before the referee disappeared into the tunnel towards the dressing room, he showed Güler a red card as the player could not calm down.
Arda Güler had put Real ahead twice in the first half. First, he capitalized on a mistake by Manuel Neuer to make it 1-0, and then he scored with a free-kick to make it 2-1. These were his first two Champions League goals of his career and also historic ones. His first goal after 35 seconds was both the fastest Champions League goal in Real’s history and the fastest Champions League goal conceded by Bayern.
Since he has now seen red, he must miss at least the first Champions League group stage match of the upcoming season.
