FC Bayern München Advances to Champions League Semifinals After Thrilling Match Against Real Madrid

FC Bayern has eliminated Real Madrid and reached the Champions League semifinals. After a 2-1 victory in the first leg, the Munich side won a turbulent second leg 4-3. Here are the FCB players’ individual performances.

Coach Vincent Kompany trusted the same starting lineup as in Madrid. After 35 seconds, Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, with a terrible misplaced pass, gifted Arda Güler the opening goal for a 0-1 lead. Aleksandar Pavlovic equalized in the 6th minute, before Güler, with a direct free-kick, scored his second and put Real back in front (29th). Harry Kane scored Bayern’s equalizer before halftime (38th), and Kylian Mbappé restored Real’s lead (42nd). The game calmed down somewhat after the break, until it became wild again just before the end. Eduardo Camavinga received a yellow-red card in the 86th minute, Luis Díaz scored the decisive equalizer in the 89th minute, and Michael Olise capped off the scoring in stoppage time for a 4-3 final score.

FC Bayern — Real Madrid Player Ratings: Manuel Neuer

Even at 40 years old, Neuer walks a fine line between genius and madness. After his stellar performance in Madrid, he gifted Arda Güler an early deficit with a very poor misplaced pass. Neuer also didn’t cover himself in glory with Güler’s direct free-kick: due to weak footwork, he couldn’t reach it with his hand at the top left. However, in the 55th minute, Neuer saved Bayern with a fantastic reflex save against Mbappé. Rating: 5.

FC Bayern — Real Madrid Player Ratings: Josip Stanišić

In the 37th minute, Stanišić’s powerful shot was saved by Real goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. Before the 2-3 goal, he unsuccessfully — and likely justifiably — appealed for a foul by Antonio Rüdiger. He was substituted at halftime, already on a yellow card. Rating: 3.

FC Bayern — Real Madrid Player Ratings: Dayot Upamecano

After a shaky appearance in Madrid, Upamecano delivered an outstanding second leg, marred by one flaw. In the 21st minute, he made a strong clearance against Vini Jr., and he set up Kane’s 2-2 with a great dribble and pass. However, Upamecano faltered on the third goal, allowing the scorer, Mbappé, to get away. He didn’t let this deter him, continuing his strong performance and creating two good headed chances himself. Rating: 2.

FC Bayern — Real Madrid Player Ratings: Jonathan Tah

Less conspicuous than Upamecano, but solid overall. Before the 2-3 goal, Tah allowed assist provider Vini Jr. too much space. He didn’t always look good against Mbappé but fought his way back into the game. Rating: 3.

FC Bayern — Real Madrid Player Ratings: Konrad Laimer

Despite the threat of a suspension, the Austrian workhorse threw himself into his tackles from the start. In the 16th minute, Laimer first received applause for his effort. In the 20th minute, he strongly prevented the breaking Mbappé from getting a shot off in the penalty area. In the 28th minute, he was perhaps a bit too rough on Brahim Diaz according to Vini Jr.’s taste, conceding the free-kick that led to the 1-2. This was an extremely harsh call. After Stanišić’s substitution at halftime, Laimer moved to the right side. Rating: 2.5.

FC Bayern — Real Madrid Player Ratings: Joshua Kimmich

Dominant in central midfield. Kimmich had many touches and delivered many good passes. He set up Pavlovic’s equalizer with a sharp corner into the box. In the 37th minute, he threatened with a dangerous shot. Rating: 2.

FC Bayern — Real Madrid Player Ratings: Michael Olise

While he repeatedly cut inside from the right in his usual manner and looked for a shot, Olise remained significantly below his usual capabilities for a long time. He ended the match with a dream goal in stoppage time. Rating: 3.

FC Bayern — Real Madrid Player Ratings: Serge Gnabry

Gnabry missed the 5-0 win against FC St. Pauli due to knee problems. As expected, he was fit to play against Real but remained ineffective and didn’t add much to Bayern’s play. Rating: 4.

FC Bayern — Real Madrid Player Ratings: Luis Díaz

With his late equalizer, Díaz became the Munich hero. As a constant source of unrest on the left wing, Díaz battled hard in many duels. He won the ball high up the pitch to earn the corner that led to the 1-1. In between, he animated the fans with wild gestures. After halftime, he missed two huge chances (46th and 62nd). Rating: 2.

FC Bayern — Real Madrid Player Ratings: Harry Kane

Kane calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right for the 2-2. He initiated Real’s third lead with an uncharacteristic loss of possession. Rating: 2.5.

FC Bayern — Real Madrid Player Ratings: Substitutes

Alphonso Davies: Came on at halftime for Stanišić and immediately set up a good chance for Díaz. Rating: 3.

Jamal Musiala: The super-sub also made the difference. Musiala was substituted on for Gnabry in the 61st minute and immediately announced his arrival with a perfect pass to Díaz. He remained impactful, setting up Díaz’s 3-3 with a backheel. Rating: 2.
