Mit Vuskovic-Bude: HSV feiert Sieg über Freiburgs Europacup-Helden im letzten Heimspiel

Hamburger SV secured another victory after their league survival, adding three points to their tally. Despite the loss, Freiburg remains in a strong position for seventh place.

After their European triumph, the tired SC Freiburg heroes stumbled, missing their first opportunity to secure a return to international competition. Three days after reaching the Europa League final, Julian Schuster’s team lost 2-3 (1-1) to Hamburger SV on the penultimate matchday of the Bundesliga.

Goals from Bakery Jatta (14′), Luka Vuskovic (64′), and Fabio Balde (67′) were the decisive strikes for the home side. Igor Matanovic’s (16’/87′) two goals were not enough for Freiburg. While the atmosphere in the Volksparkstadion was celebratory following their early league survival, three medical emergencies in the stands momentarily silenced the 57,000 fans.

It was meant to be a complete celebration: exactly one year ago, Merlin Polzin’s team secured their return to the Bundesliga. They now head into the season finale as eleventh in the table.

Freiburg Faces ‘Final’ for 7th Place Ahead of Frankfurt and Augsburg

Following Eintracht Frankfurt’s Friday evening defeat to Borussia Dortmund, a win would have guaranteed Freiburg an early qualification for the Conference League playoffs. However, the Breisgau team showed signs of fatigue from their recent demanding schedule.

Nevertheless, Freiburg enters the final matchday against RB Leipzig with a one-point lead over Frankfurt and FC Augsburg. Just four days later, Schuster and his team have the chance to make history in the Europa League final in Istanbul. A victory against Aston Villa would see Freiburg compete in the Champions League next season.

Schuster had stated before the match that his team still possessed ‘hunger’ and ‘full focus’ even after reaching the final, expressing optimism that they were in good position to ‘take the next step’ on Sunday.

Heuer-Fernandes Saves, Vuskovic and Balde Decide the Match

Freiburg fell behind early when Jatta slotted home from close range after a well-worked attack – it was the first Bundesliga goal for the longest-serving HSV player, who has been with the club since 2016. However, Matanovic immediately equalized in his hometown.

The match, played in excellent football weather, developed into a balanced affair. Driven by Fabio Vieira, HSV repeatedly pushed forward, while Freiburg waited for their opportunities and increased the tempo when needed. HSV’s defensive leader, Vuskovic, marshaled the defense securely for the most part on his return to the starting lineup.

Both teams emerged from the break with energy, each creating a significant chance: Lukas Kübler’s long-range effort was saved by Daniel Heuer Fernandes for Freiburg (51′), while Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer missed a chance to give HSV the lead (52′).

As Freiburg’s energy waned, HSV intensified their efforts. Vuskovic’s deflected free-kick goal was fortunate, and shortly after, Balde remained composed on a quick counter-attack. Matanovic’s late goal reignited some tension in the closing stages.
