The situation for Frankfurt’s coach is becoming increasingly precarious, with critical voices growing louder amidst the sporting crisis.
Criticism of Albert Riera shows no signs of abating. Now, Dietmar Hamann has sharply questioned the Eintracht Frankfurt coach, employing strong language.
Hamann told Sky that Eintracht is «in rubble and ashes.» He added, «It’s not just the results, but also what you hear from the players.» Hamann expressed concern about the development of certain players under Riera, stating, «What happened to Götze or Uzun… it’s simply not possible to do that in such a short time.»
Mario Götze No Longer Plays a Role — Can Uzun Returns
Götze was a starter at the beginning of Riera’s tenure in Frankfurt, but only for four games. In the subsequent nine matches, the 33-year-old spent 90 minutes on the bench six times, was not in the squad once, and accumulated only 56 minutes of playing time in two appearances.
Uzun was sidelined with an injury upon Riera’s arrival and was slowly integrated back into the team after his recovery. In the last three matches, the 20-year-old has been in the starting lineup for the Hessen team, scoring two goals and providing one assist.
Hamann anticipates another coaching change after the season, as he believes Frankfurt is developing in the wrong direction. «When you bring in a new coach, you want to see development. The first few games were okay, but since then, it’s been going backward,» the 52-year-old stated. «They will likely get a new coach again in the summer – and then we’ll have to see what happens next.»
Two Months Without a Win: Riera’s Days Numbered?
Indeed, it seemed Riera might stabilize Eintracht after Dino Toppmöller’s dismissal in February. Eintracht initially appeared more defensively solid and won three of their first six games under the Spaniard, with only one loss in Munich.
However, the 1-0 victory against bottom-placed 1. FC Heidenheim two months ago was Eintracht’s last win. The team now makes a poor impression both offensively and defensively and risks missing out on international competition next season.
After Friday’s defeat at BVB, Sporting Director Markus Krösche evaded questions about the coach’s future. «We are disappointed about the loss and are now doing everything we can to win against Stuttgart next week,» the 45-year-old said.
In addition to the lack of results and unsatisfactory performances, Riera has certainly not done himself any favors with his public image. His media criticism before the HSV match last weekend certainly did not receive a positive reception, and the subsequent performance in the 1-2 home defeat against the promoted side did little to help.
Bild-Zeitung reports that the separation from Riera is already a done deal. Sky has reported similarly.
