Zola Remembers Vialli: "His Rapport with Mancini Was Evident at the Euros"
At Trento's Festival dello Sport, during the "Vialli forever" panel, former Cagliari, Napoli, Chelsea, and Parma forward Gianfranco Zola spoke about his relationship with the late Gianluca Vialli.
Zola recalled Vialli's distinctive approach, noting occasional disagreements, particularly when Vialli was a coach and Zola a player. "He wanted me not just to do things, but to do them his way," Zola explained. "For instance, I'd say, 'You want me to pick up the ball in that area? I'll go, but then let me do what I want!' and we'd debate."
Gianluca's Strength
"I'd highlight his intelligence," Zola stated. "We all know his physical and technical skills. Everyone saw that, but Luca's true strength was his footballing intelligence. He always knew where to go, how to use opponents to his advantage. Coaches would warn markers: 'Be careful, he uses you on the pitch.' His intelligence was truly superior."
The European Championship Win
"Sometimes a team's success hinges on managing key moments," Zola commented on the Azzurri's victory at Wembley and their overall tournament journey. "Having people with the experience and rapport that he and Mancini had was vital for helping players navigate situations. You could see the team's strength; everyone moved in one direction, even with their limitations. We weren't the strongest, but we had clear ideas, which showed in how we handled difficult moments, like the complex final."
