Jamahl Mosley Hired by New Orleans Pelicans Two Weeks After Orlando Magic Exit

Jamahl Mosley has secured a new long-term contract with the New Orleans Pelicans, just two weeks after his dismissal from the Orlando Magic following their playoff elimination. Mosley signed his new deal with the Pelicans on Monday.

«Jamahl has earned tremendous respect across the NBA for his leadership, professionalism, and the strong relationships he builds with players and staff,» stated Joe Dumars, Executive Vice President of the Pelicans, in a press release.

Dumars continued, «He has consistently demonstrated his ability to develop young talent while building teams that are characterized by toughness, discipline, and cohesion. His teams always reflect his coaching style through their defensive intensity, effort, and sound preparation and play. These qualities enhance the long-term stability of a winning culture.»

Mosley previously succeeded in fostering such a culture in Orlando. After the young Magic squad finished last in the Eastern Conference in his first year, they improved to 13th place before reaching the Eastern Conference Playoffs for the last three seasons.

He is expected to be given ample time in New Orleans, reportedly signing a five-year deal according to multiple media reports.

Mosley’s Tenure with the Magic: A Mixed Legacy

Despite guiding the Magic, which featured German players Franz Wagner, Moritz Wagner, and Tristan da Silva, Mosley’s teams never advanced beyond the first round of the playoffs. This season, both players and fans in Florida had championship aspirations.

The Magic only secured a playoff berth in the second Play-In game. In their series against the top-seeded Detroit Pistons, the Magic held a 3-1 lead but lost the final three games after Franz Wagner’s injury. This included a particularly disappointing Game 6, marked by a historic collapse in Orlando’s offense.

Criticism of Mosley grew during the season. While the 47-year-old consistently built strong defenses, he struggled to establish a consistently effective offense centered around stars Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. He also reportedly had several verbal altercations with Banchero.

Pelicans’ Young Talent: Mosley’s Next Challenge

The Pelicans were far from playoff contention last season, finishing eleventh in the regular season and eleven wins shy of a Play-In spot.

In addition to experienced players like Zion Williamson, Trey Murphy III, Dejounte Murray, Jordan Poole, and Herb Jones, the Pelicans’ roster includes young talents such as Yves Missi, Derik Queen, and Jeremiah Fears, whom Mosley will be tasked with developing. However, following a significant trade last year, New Orleans currently does not possess a first-round pick in the upcoming draft, with their first selection at number 58.

Other candidates reportedly considered for the Pelicans’ coaching position, besides Mosley who was apparently contacted immediately after his Magic dismissal, included Darvin Ham (Assistant Coach with the Milwaukee Bucks), former NBA star Rajon Rondo, Steve Hetzel (Assistant Coach with the Brooklyn Nets), and interim coach James Borrego.
