Russia to Compete in U15 World Cup with FIFA Approval
Russia is set to return to FIFA competitions for the first time since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The national team is listed as a participant in the U15 Men's World Cup and Festival, scheduled for next month in Azerbaijan.
Following the invasion, Russian clubs and national teams faced bans from FIFA and UEFA tournaments. While FIFA lifted the prohibition on Russian U17 teams in 2023, this upcoming event will be the first actual match for a Russian team. The Russian squad is grouped with Turkey, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Sierra Leone, and Sudan.
Last December, the FIFA Council agreed that the U15 tournament would be open to teams from all 211 affiliated federations. In July, the IOC withdrew its recommendation for global sports federations like FIFA to ban Russia. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has previously stated that Russia's exclusion from competitions was "unproductive."
Russia set to participate in the FIFA U15 World Cup.
Russia is preparing to re-enter FIFA competitions, a move that comes after their ban following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The nation's U15 team is officially listed to compete in the World Cup and Festival taking place next month in Azerbaijan.
This marks a significant development, as both Russian clubs and national teams were prohibited from participating in FIFA and UEFA events. Although the ban on Russian U17 teams was rescinded by FIFA in 2023, this will be the first instance of an actual competition for a Russian team.
Russia has been drawn into a group with Turkey, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Sierra Leone, and Sudan. The FIFA Council confirmed in December that the U15 tournament would be accessible to all 211 member federations. Earlier in July, the IOC had withdrawn its advisory against banning Russia from global sports federations, including FIFA. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has previously voiced his opinion that excluding Russia from competitions was "unproductive."
