Hansi Flick Experiences the Most Emotional Hours of His Life at FC Barcelona

Hansi Flick’s eyes welled up as fireworks illuminated the Camp Nou, signaling the start of a grand championship celebration. Following what were undoubtedly the most emotional hours of his life, the 61-year-old was overwhelmed by the confluence of his father’s passing and FC Barcelona’s Clásico title win. «It was a tough day. A day I will never forget,» Flick stated later, addressing the jubilant fans through the stadium’s microphone.

Earlier, Barcelona stars like Lamine Yamal had lifted their coach into the air. Flick, however, observed the subsequent championship trophy presentation more as a spectator, though he was repeatedly and empathetically embraced by numerous well-wishers. The entire club mourned and celebrated with him. The former national coach described Barcelona as «like a family to me.»

Flick, who sat on the bench in a black sweater during the 2-0 victory against Real Madrid, recounted the day’s events at the press conference. «This morning, my mother called me and told me my father had passed away. Then I wondered: Should I keep it to myself? Or talk about it?» he revealed. Shortly after, Flick informed his players («I will never forget how they reacted»), then the public – and remained in Barcelona.

Players and fans showered Flick with affection for his decision. «We often say that football gives you a big family. For me, Flick is like a father,» said Raphinha. Teammate Pedri explained that the team had «won the title for him.» Central defender Pau Cubarsi added that the championship was «for the entire Flick family.»

After two years in Barcelona, this was Flick’s fifth trophy, and his contract extension until 2028 is imminent. «The German coach will never forget the affection he has received in Barcelona from day one,» wrote the newspaper El Mundo Deportivo. Even Marca, based in Madrid, paid tribute: «Flick is ushering in a new era thanks to his success, his demeanor, and his personality. He fully identifies with the club.»

It’s no wonder, as the entire club stood behind him on Sunday. Before the 264th clash between the rivals, a minute of silence was observed in the stadium, accompanied by classical music, and both teams played with black armbands. Flick fought back tears as the fans chanted his name. He later said he had «never» felt so much love at the Camp Nou. And precisely because of this, Flick is far from done. He aims to break the 100-point mark this season with three more wins and is determined to finally win the Champions League next year. But first, Flick had to process this deeply emotional May 10th. «I will never forget this day. Never. I am truly happy here in Barcelona,» Flick concluded his press conference: «For me, all of this here is like a family.»
