Palladino on Atalanta's 1-6 Bayern Loss: "I'd Play the Same Way Again"
Raffaele Palladino discussed Atalanta's crushing 6-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, attributing the significant quality gap between the teams as the primary reason for the outcome. Despite the heavy loss, he firmly stated that he would employ the same tactical approach if the match were to be replayed.
Atalanta suffered a dominant 6-1 thrashing at home from a ruthless Bayern side in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie. Goals from Josip Stanisic, Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry, Nicolas Jackson, Jamal Musiala, and Mario Pasalic sealed Bayern's victory.
Palladino acknowledged his team was thoroughly outclassed by their Bundesliga opponents but expressed confidence that this experience would foster growth for both the players and the team. "First and foremost, congratulations to Bayern. They are an exceptionally strong team, at times truly unplayable," Palladino remarked after the final whistle. "For us, the true stars were our fans. I want to extend my gratitude to them; they supported us relentlessly until the very end, despite the defeat."
He continued, "This is an experience that will contribute to our development. I would approach the game in precisely the same manner if given another chance. Our current position—reaching the Coppa Italia semi-finals and competing robustly in the league—stems from our inherent mentality, and for that reason, I would not alter our playing style."
Atalanta will look to rebound in Serie A this weekend, facing another formidable challenge: an away match against league leaders Inter at San Siro on Saturday. "The team has consistently responded well to setbacks, and we will demonstrate that resilience as early as Saturday," Palladino affirmed. "We are up against another strong opponent in Inter, but I have instructed the team to accept this result and focus on regaining their energy."
Revisiting the Bayern defeat, Palladino observed, "We faltered in the second half. They possess incredible dribbling prowess and exceptionally strong wingers. Bayern is a team destined to go all the way in this competition. Nevertheless, I am pleased with my team, who fought tirelessly until the final whistle. And once again, my thanks go to the fans."
Palladino reiterated his commitment to Atalanta's man-to-man marking system, even though some might see it as contributing to their downfall against Bayern. "We anticipated they would pose significant difficulties, given their powerful attacking players and deep runs. We acknowledge their strengths and qualities. We have achieved what we have because of this mentality, and we will not abandon it. We won't resort to zonal defending; we accept the result, knowing that we either win or we learn."
He further added, "I have rarely witnessed players of such exceptional quality. They truly impressed me with their ability to deliver the ball perfectly to their preferred foot at the ideal speed. You can try to defend deep, but they will still find ways to hurt you. We were also hampered by four significant absences, limiting our attacking options, and we preferred to maintain consistency after our weekend game against Udinese. We were unable to effectively restart our play; their aggression meant they immediately regained possession. We have reached this stage, having overcome teams like Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund, due to our strong mentality. Aside from the system, the fundamental difference lies in the individual players' quality."
