Napoli Leads Race for Lecce Star Tiago Gabriel Amidst €30M Transfer Battle

Napoli is reportedly at the forefront in the pursuit of Lecce's promising defender, Tiago Gabriel. The upcoming match against Lecce will provide the Partenopei with an opportunity to closely observe their target, whose services were already sought by several clubs in January, though Lecce managed to retain him, as reported by Italian media.

Lecce's director, Pantaleo Corvino, acknowledged Napoli's interest in Gabriel during an interview, but also noted that it's premature to confirm any potential move to Campania.

According to various sources, Napoli faces competition from multiple teams for Gabriel's signature. Lecce previously declined a €22 million offer from Brentford in the last transfer window, believing they can secure a fee of around €30 million. While Serie A giants Inter, Juventus, and Milan have also been monitoring the young center-back, Napoli's pursuit has been more persistent. However, the most significant competition is anticipated to come from Premier League clubs, a league where Lecce has previously seen success in transferring talents like Patrick Dorgu.

The 21-year-old Portuguese defender began his career at Estrela Amadora before moving to Italy for just over €1 million in January 2025. He swiftly established himself as a key player within six months. Napoli's current defensive situation presents a clear need: Sam Beukema, acquired last summer, has not met expectations, and the club plans to evaluate offers for him. Furthermore, regular starter Juan Jesus's contract is nearing its end, with extension talks progressing slowly.

Considering Napoli's long-standing use of a three-man defense, a tactical shift might be imminent, especially with key midfielders returning. While Gabriel is a bright prospect, integrating another young defender could be challenging, particularly given that even Beukema, a standout at Bologna, has struggled to adapt under the current setup.
