Global University Rankings: MIT Maintains Lead, Italian Universities Excel in Specific Fields

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has once again been named the world's top university, marking its fourteenth consecutive year at the pinnacle of the QS World University Rankings. Following MIT in global excellence are other prestigious institutions: Imperial College London, Stanford University, the University of Oxford, and Harvard University.

Compiled by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, these rankings also highlight a notable surge in the performance of Asian universities. A prime example is the National University of Singapore, which has climbed 20 positions in just three years, projecting its entry into the Top Ten by 2026.

Italian universities have also achieved significant international recognition. Sapienza University of Rome, for the sixth consecutive year, stands as the world's leading institution for Classics and Ancient History, outperforming esteemed universities such as Fudan University, Peking University, and the University of Oxford in this specialized field. Politecnico di Milano has secured a place among the global elite, ranking 98th overall. This esteemed Milanese institution further distinguished itself by placing 6th worldwide for Architecture and 7th for Art & Design. Other Italian successes include Bocconi University, which ranks 9th globally in Marketing and 10th in Business & Management Studies, and Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, which earned the 10th spot in Classical Studies.

The comprehensive methodology behind these rankings involves an extensive analysis of 21,000 academic programs across more than 1,900 universities in 100 different countries. It encompasses 55 disciplines categorized into five broad study areas: Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences, Economics & Management. Key indicators used to determine the rankings include academic reputation, employer reputation, research impact (measured by citations per paper and the H-Index for prolificacy), and the strength of international research networks (IRN) among co-authors.
