Eddie Howe is expected to continue as the head coach of Newcastle United, a decision that could have significant implications for Nick Woltemade’s future with the club.
According to a report from The Athletic, strong indications suggest that Howe will retain his position with the Magpies and continue beyond the current summer.
The report indicates that extensive discussions took place within the club this week, involving a 25-member delegation from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), Newcastle’s majority owner.
During these discussions, it was reportedly decided that the 48-year-old coach should remain on the sidelines for the upcoming season, provided no unforeseen circumstances arise before the end of the current campaign.
Howe took over the Magpies in November 2021 and guided them to Champions League qualification in the 2023/24 and 2025/26 seasons. However, despite substantial squad investment, the team’s performance this season has been disappointing. With three games remaining, the club sits in 13th place in the Premier League table, confirming they will miss out on European competition.
Will Nick Woltemade Leave Newcastle United This Summer?
The job security for Howe might also influence Nick Woltemade’s future at Newcastle. The German international forward, who joined the North East club from VfB Stuttgart last summer for a reported €75 million, has seen limited opportunities under the 48-year-old manager recently.
After a promising start, scoring four goals in his first five Premier League appearances, Woltemade has struggled with a significant goal drought. His last league goal came at the end of December against Chelsea, and he has subsequently fallen out of the starting lineup.
Adding to his challenges is the new role Howe assigned him during the season. When the international player did feature, he was tactically deployed as a central midfielder. This situation had already drawn criticism, even from national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, regarding Woltemade’s role for the upcoming World Cup.
He was entirely unused in the recent 3-1 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion, further fueling speculation about an early departure from Newcastle, rumors that have been circulating for weeks.
A Telegraph article, oddly attributed to an alleged confidant of Howe, labeled Woltemade as a poor signing that Newcastle should offload as soon as possible. The assessment was harsh, describing the international player as too slow, not a genuine goalscorer, unable to hold up the ball effectively, posing no distant threat, and not consistently competing in aerial duels.
