Coventry City Returns to the Premier League After 25 Years, With Frank Lampard at the Helm

Coventry City, a founding member of the league, is making a comeback to the English Premier League after a 25-year hiatus.

The historic club, managed by Frank Lampard, has officially secured promotion to the top flight with three games left in the Championship season, following a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers. A late goal from Bobby Thomas in the 84th minute secured the crucial point needed for advancement.

«This is an unbelievable moment. To achieve this after 25 years… wow, just wow. Coventry was always a top-flight team when I was growing up, but I didn’t consciously realize it back then. Now we’re back,» Lampard stated in an interview with Sky Sports.

The former England international took over the club in November 2024, following a previous unsuccessful spell at Chelsea.

Coventry City was relegated from the top division in 2001 after 34 consecutive seasons and had not returned until now. In the 2017/18 season, the ‘Sky Blues’ even found themselves in the fourth tier of English football, and at one point, the club played its home games in Northampton, 50 kilometers away.
