Borussia Dortmund Pursues Premier League Defender with Bundesliga Past

Borussia Dortmund is reportedly interested in acquiring Konstantinos Mavropanos, the former VfB Stuttgart defender currently playing for West Ham United.

According to a report from Sky, BVB has been discussing the potential signing of the West Ham center-back during the past few weeks, with a view to a summer transfer.

Mavropanos is said to be looking to leave the relegation-threatened Hammers after the current season, despite having a contract until 2028, and is seeking a new challenge. Besides Dortmund, other Bundesliga clubs are also reportedly monitoring him, along with interest from other Premier League clubs.

A new central defender could be a valuable addition for Borussia Dortmund. Niklas Süle is set to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season when his contract expires. Additionally, Emre Can is sidelined for an extended period due to a cruciate ligament tear. While Nico Schlotterbeck has recently extended his contract until 2031, his new agreement is believed to include a release clause that could allow the German international to move to select top clubs as early as after the World Cup.

Sky suggests that any potential pursuit of Mavropanos by Dortmund could be complicated by West Ham’s high transfer fee demands. However, a potential relegation for the English club, currently sitting 17th in the league, could alter this situation, potentially forcing West Ham into player sales.

Returning to the Bundesliga? Konstantinos Mavropanos Could Rejoin the German League

Mavropanos is familiar with the Bundesliga from his time at VfB Stuttgart. The Greek international joined Arsenal as a young talent from his homeland in 2018. The Gunners later loaned him to second-division club 1. FC Nürnberg in the second half of the 2019/20 season. This was followed by a two-year loan spell at Stuttgart, after which VfB permanently signed the defender for a total of nearly four million euros.

During his three years with the Swabians, Mavropanos was largely a regular starter, making a total of 80 Bundesliga appearances and scoring six goals. In the 2022/23 season, he played a crucial role in VfB’s survival in the league, notably scoring the early opening goal in the first leg of the relegation playoff against Hamburger SV, which VfB won 3-0.

In the summer of 2023, West Ham paid a transfer fee of 20 million euros for the Greek international. The 28-year-old has been a standout performer for the English club in recent months, consistently delivering strong performances.
