Why does the 2026 World Cup proceed to the Round of 32 instead of the Round of 16 after the group stage? SPOX explains the format and illustrates the tournament bracket.
Suddenly, there’s an extra knockout round. After the group stage, the four semi-finalists—who then compete in the final and third-place playoff—will play five more matches, instead of the usual four, following their three preliminary round games.
This is a new development introduced by FIFA for the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico (June 11 — July 19).
SPOX explains the reasoning behind this change.
2026 World Cup Format and Tournament Bracket: Why the Round of 32 and Not the Round of 16 After the Group Stage?
The progression to the Round of 32, rather than the traditional Round of 16 after the group stage, and thus an additional knockout round, is due to the increased number of participating teams in the tournament.
In 2026, FIFA will allow a record 48 nations to compete in the World Cup, an increase from the 32 teams that participated up to the 2022 tournament in Qatar. This expansion is the straightforward reason for the extra round in the knockout phase.
In the group stage (June 11 — June 28), teams will be divided into twelve groups of four. The teams that finish in the top two positions after three matchdays are guaranteed to advance. Additionally, the eight best third-placed teams will also qualify for the Round of 32. In this scenario, third-placed teams will first be compared based on their points.
This will leave 32 teams remaining. This is the same number of participants that started the tournament up to 2022. Comparing it to the old format, it’s essentially as if the World Cup is beginning with the last 32 teams this time. After the Round of 32, the tournament will proceed as usual with the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place playoff, and the final.

2026 World Cup, Format and Tournament Bracket: Why the Round of 32 and Not the Round of 16 After the Group Stage? — Previous Formats
The World Cup format has undergone several changes since its first edition in 1930.
| World Cup | Format |
|---|---|
| Uruguay 1930 | A total of 13 teams participated in a group stage consisting of three groups of three and one group of four. The four group winners advanced directly to the semi-finals. |
| Italy 1934 – France 1938 | In both tournaments, 16 teams competed in a pure knockout system. |
| Brazil 1950 | After a twelve-year hiatus due to World War II, 13 teams participated. They played in four groups. The four group winners reached a final round, where they determined the winner in a «round-robin» format. To this day, it is the only World Cup without a final match. |
| Switzerland 1954 | In 1954, the world governing body changed the format again: 16 teams played in four groups, with two seeded teams in each group who only had to play against the two unseeded teams. The top two teams from each group advanced directly to the quarter-finals. |
| Sweden 1958 – Mexico 1970 | Again, 16 teams participated, but there was a change in the group stage: each team played against all other teams in their group. The top two teams again advanced to the quarter-finals. |
| West Germany 1974 – Argentina 1978 | In these two tournaments, there was another format change: instead of quarter-finals and semi-finals, there was a second group stage. The top teams from this second group stage directly reached the final, while the second-placed teams played for third place. |
| Spain 1982 | The tournament grew from 16 to 24 teams. Six groups of four formed the first round. The six group winners and six runners-up formed four new groups of three. The best teams from each group of three reached the semi-finals. |
| Mexico 1986 – USA 1994 | The second group stage was removed. The tournament started with six groups, and the four best third-placed teams, along with the top two from each group, advanced to the Round of 16. |
| France 1998 to Qatar 2022 | Further expansion occurred as the World Cup was extended to 32 teams. The first phase consisted of eight groups of four teams each, with the top two from each group advancing to the Round of 16. |
