Uli Hoeneß Warns Bayern Munich Against Real Madrid & Dampens Triple Hopes

Despite the FC Bayern Munich squad appearing revitalized and hungry under coach Vincent Kompany, honorary president Uli Hoeneß has urged a degree of caution regarding expectations, particularly concerning their Champions League aspirations.

Hoeneß emphasized that regardless of their current domestic form, Real Madrid traditionally poses an extreme threat in Champions League encounters. «They don’t always play particularly good football, but their routine is outstanding, and they are fit at the crucial moment,» Hoeneß warned ahead of the quarter-final matches against ‘Los Blancos’. He added, «They might not be performing exceptionally well in the league again, but they can draw upon their immense wealth of experience.»

The spirit within the record champions’ squad currently evokes memories of their most successful periods, with every player seemingly committed to the ambitious goal of a treble. This dedication has allowed Coach Kompany’s team to regularly captivate audiences. «We haven’t had such great chances in terms of playing level for a long time as we do this year,» the Bavarian club patron noted. However, he quickly added that it would be «totally presumptuous» to assume automatic progression.

As a testament to Real Madrid’s knockout-stage prowess, Hoeneß recalled their impressive elimination of Manchester City, managed by former Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, in the round of 16 (3-0 and 2-1 wins), even as the illustrious Spanish club had faced perceived internal struggles throughout that season.

Hoeneß Also Warns Against DFB-Pokal Opponent Leverkusen: «That Will Be Difficult»

Hoeneß likely also reflected on Bayern’s recent history against Real, having lost the last three knockout ties to the Spanish giants. However, a crucial difference that could provide an advantage for FC Bayern this time is the return leg taking place at the Allianz Arena. Furthermore, Bayern had a comfortable passage through their Champions League round of 16, defeating Atalanta Bergamo (who had previously knocked out Borussia Dortmund) with an aggregate score of 10-2. The team also benefited from the return of key players Joshua Kimmich and Michael Olise, who were suspended for previous matches, while Real faced the prospect of several key players being one yellow card away from suspension for the first leg, and star goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois potentially sidelined due to injury.

Ultimately, the 74-year-old was unwilling to let current form lead to assumptions about a potential treble. «That’s too optimistic,» he stated. He also highlighted a significant challenge in the DFB-Pokal, where Bayern was scheduled to face Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-finals. «That will be difficult,» he predicted. Only regarding the Bundesliga title did Hoeneß express firm confidence, saying, «I would say we will be German champions.» At that time, Bayern held a nine-point lead over closest rivals Borussia Dortmund ahead of the 27th matchday.
