The specter of relegation continues to haunt North London. Tottenham Hotspur faltered against Chelsea, missing out on securing their Premier League status early and now face an uncomfortable final stretch of the season.
Chelsea FC has preserved their European competition aspirations and postponed the final relegation decision in the English Premier League. The Blues defeated London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 (1-0) on the penultimate matchday, moving back to eighth place. This position currently qualifies them for the Conference League, which Chelsea won in 2025.
Enzo Fernández (18th minute) and Andrey Santos (68th minute) scored for Chelsea. Richarlison (74th minute) managed to pull one back for Spurs, but it was only a consolation goal. Tottenham, featuring former Bayern Munich players João Palhinha and Mathys Tel in their starting lineup, must now engage in a distant battle for survival on the final matchday this Sunday against city rivals West Ham United. Spurs (38 points, -10 goal difference) will face Everton FC, while the Hammers (36 points, -22 goal difference) will play Leeds.
Chelsea (52 points) could even leapfrog to seventh place and secure a spot in the Europa League when they face Sunderland (51 points), currently in tenth. Competitor Brighton & Hove Albion (53 points) will play Manchester United. Ninth-placed FC Brentford (52 points) also still has a chance.
