World Cup champion Thierry Henry has been highly critical of Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance in Portugal’s opening World Cup match against DR Congo.
During the Selecao’s first group stage game, the Al-Nassr superstar was noticeably outshone within an already underperforming Portuguese team.
CR7 frequently attempted to finish plays himself rather than passing to a better-positioned teammate, yet his shots rarely posed a significant threat. Furthermore, the 41-year-old showed limited off-the-ball movement and infrequently contributed defensively.
«The team needs a goal, not you,» stated Henry, who is working for US television broadcaster Fox at the tournament in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. This comment came after Ronaldo opted to shoot directly on a cross from teammate Francisco Conceicao in the second half, instead of passing to a completely unmarked Bruno Fernandes. CR7’s shot went well wide of the post.
«Because he wants to score a goal, he takes this pass. The defender can then see both opposing players, and it’s much easier for him to defend. That’s the point. You saw Bruno Fernandes’ reaction,» Henry added, referencing the lamenting stance of the Manchester United midfielder.
Ronaldo Complained to His Goalkeeper About the Conceded Goal
Ronaldo also displayed a negative attitude when he vocally complained to goalkeeper Diogo Costa about the equalizing goal. The FC Porto goalkeeper had remained on his line during a cross into his goal following a short-corner routine, instead of decisively clearing the ball from the danger zone.
Ultimately, the clear favorite, Portugal, could only manage a disappointing 1-1 draw (1-1) against DR Congo, who are participating in a World Cup finals for only the second time ever.
PSG star Joao Neves (6th minute) had given the Selecao an early 1-0 lead, but Yoane Wissa of Newcastle United scored the equalizer just before halftime (45.+5 minute).
