Why the World Cup Ball Looks Different from the Start of the 2026 Tournament

The ball used in the 2026 World Cup has undergone a visual transformation, moving from a colorful design to a more uniform one as the tournament progresses. SPOX investigates the reasons behind this change.

Initially, the Adidas ball featured a vibrant, multi-colored design. However, for the latter stages of the tournament, which is now solely being held in the USA, a more subdued color scheme has been introduced. Specifically, the ball now appears darker, with black and gold accents.

The "Trionda Final," as the new ball is officially named, was introduced by FIFA starting from the semi-final matches. It will also be used in the third-place playoff and the final.

According to FIFA, the "Trionda Final" is an evolution of the original "Trionda" ball unveiled in October 2025. The updated color scheme is described as more serious and symbolic of the increased intensity and stakes of the final matches. The design aims to reflect the pursuit of the most prestigious trophy in football, with a premium gold finish reminiscent of the FIFA World Cup trophy, set against a black background to make the ball stand out as a distinctive mark of the tournament's closing stages.

The design of the "Trionda Final" also incorporates elements representing the 16 host cities across the three North American nations. Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, and New York/New Jersey, as venues for the final four games, are central motifs. The triangular graphics on the ball also integrate Boston, Guadalajara, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Monterrey, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Toronto, and Vancouver, acknowledging their significant contributions to the tournament's success.

The previous ball primarily featured red, blue, and green as its main colors, alongside the white panels that are still present on the new version. Both balls display the Adidas logo and the FIFA World Cup 2026 logo. The original ball is marked with "TRIONDA," while the new one is labeled "TRIONDA FINAL."

It's worth noting that introducing a revised ball for the knockout stages of a World Cup is not a new practice. This occurred in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and even earlier in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where the ball change happened as early as the round of 16. For instance, in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, a new variant was used in the final, with the black elements on the "Teamgeist" ball being gold-plated.
