"I Wouldn't Even Talk to My Dog Like That": Former Bundesliga Striker Clashes with Referee

Former Bundesliga striker Wout Weghorst argued with referee Serdar Gözübüyük during the Eredivisie top match between Twente Enschede and PSV Eindhoven, leveling serious accusations.

Late in the first half, the Dutch forward fell during a challenge with Armando Obispo, with the Eindhoven player striking Weghorst's ankle with a kick. The 34-year-old then confronted referee Gözübüyük. Instead of a reaction towards his opponent, the referee issued a yellow card to Weghorst himself. Obispo took the incident lightly, stating, "He didn't do that intentionally, you know. That was just part of the challenge."

Weghorst, however, expressed his displeasure more forcefully towards the referee, accusing him of disrespectful conduct. "When you're in the heat of the moment in a game like this, I think a bit of emotion is allowed. He dismissed me in a way that made me think, 'I wouldn't even talk to my own dog like that.'" He felt he hadn't behaved disrespectfully and found Gözübüyük's reaction surprising. "He showed me a yellow card for that. In my opinion, he's done this in the last four games too, so I wonder if this is becoming arbitrary." Nevertheless, the striker downplayed the incident: "It's a shame, but completely unimportant."

Wout Weghorst Scores in Twente Enschede's Victory

On a sporting level, the afternoon went precisely as Weghorst would have liked. The former VfL Wolfsburg and TSG Hoffenheim forward, who was famously on the receiving end of Lionel Messi's outburst at the 2022 World Cup, scored the goal that made it 2-2 in Twente's win against Eindhoven. Twente ultimately secured a 3-2 victory.

"A fantastic afternoon, a real joy. We wanted to apply high pressure at times and at other moments play counter-attacks from a deeper block. Apart from about fifteen minutes in the first half, we implemented that very well for large parts of the game and I think we were the better team," Weghorst praised his teammates' performance.
