VfL Wolfsburg's Slow Start: Bundesliga Relegation Blues in the Second Division
Bundesliga relegated VfL Wolfsburg has experienced a sluggish beginning to their second division season. On Saturday evening, the Lower Saxony club could only manage a 0-0 draw against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, facing an immediate setback in their quest for promotion.
"There were good phases, but also not-so-good ones," admitted Wolfsburg's new coach Tobias Strobl in a Sky interview. "It's a mixed feeling." He added that "there's still plenty of room for improvement," while key signing Fabian Reese stated that the game "made us want more."
Coach Tobias Strobl fielded six new signings in his starting lineup. Star acquisition Fabian Reese was deployed on the left wing, with Robert Glatzel as the sole striker. However, it was Kaiserslautern's Naatan Skyttä who had the first significant chance to put the visitors ahead in the seventh minute.
Both teams engaged in an open exchange of attacks, but Wolfsburg increased the pressure as the first half progressed. Shortly before halftime, Hauke Wahl's volley struck the outside of the post (41st minute). The teams went into the break goalless.
Wolfsburg Dominated Possession, Kaiserslautern Had Better Chances
In the second half, Kaiserslautern continued to push forward bravely, exposing gaps in the home team's defense. Wolfsburg keeper Jakub Zielinski made a strong save against Skyttä to prevent a deficit (56th minute).
Wolfsburg had more of the ball, but lacked inventive ideas in attack. The visitors remained more dangerous, with an 18-year-old Zielinski again denying Ibrahim Kanaté with a save (70th minute).
