VfB Stuttgart's Champions League Push Strengthened by Stellar Deniz Undav Performance

Deniz Undav continues to be the decisive factor: The VfB Stuttgart striker proved unstoppable once again, securing crucial points for his team in their pursuit of a Champions League spot.

Just three days after their exit from the Europa League Round of 16, Undav found the net in his sixth consecutive Bundesliga match during the commanding 5-2 (3-0) Swabian derby triumph over FC Augsburg. This victory propelled VfB to third place in the standings at the close of the 27th matchday.

Besides Undav's brace (12th and 58th minute), which brought his season tally to 17 and 18 goals, Tiago Tomás (29th), Nikolas Nartey (31st), and Ermedin Demirovic (83rd) also contributed to the emphatic away win. Heading into the international break, Stuttgart now holds a three-point lead over chasing rivals RB Leipzig and TSG Hoffenheim. Furthermore, Bayer Leverkusen's 3-3 draw in Heidenheim further solidified Stuttgart's strong position among the league's top teams.

Fabian Rieder (57th) and Anton Kade (72nd) scored for Augsburg, who suffered their third consecutive defeat and their first home loss under coach Manuel Baum. FCA had been unbeaten in their previous eight matches at the WWK Arena, but this record run was halted by VfB, mirroring a similar situation from the 2011/12 season.

Ahead of the match, Augsburg coach Manuel Baum had metaphorically rallied his team against the favorites, stating, "We love planks, no matter how thick they are. There are different drills. We need to sharpen our drill; we need a hammer drill."

Augsburg Improves Only After Half-Time

However, Stuttgart, with coach Sebastian Hoeneß making five changes to the squad that played Porto on Thursday, gave their opponents no quarter. Undav calmly converted after a cross from Angelo Stiller and an unfortunate deflection off FCA goalkeeper Finn Dahmen. This goal marked VfB's 18th consecutive away league match with a goal, equaling a club record set in 1984 and 1985.

The visitors combined with ease. Tomás found the net effortlessly after a brilliant back-heel pass from Nartey, and just 110 seconds later, Nartey himself scored, assisted by Maximilian Mittelstädt.

And Augsburg? They were largely on the back foot in the first half but emerged much improved after the break. Han-Noah Massengo was denied by German national team reserve goalkeeper Alexander Nübel (47th), and Cédric Zesiger missed a clear chance (56th) before Rieder eventually pulled one back. Yet, Undav immediately restored Stuttgart's two-goal cushion in the very next attack. Kade managed to get a second goal for the hosts, but Undav capped off his stellar performance with an assist for Demirovic, sealing Stuttgart's dominant victory.
