Injury Shock at BVB: Konstantinos Karetsas Carried Off the Pitch
Borussia Dortmund experienced an early shock in their Champions League opener against FC Villarreal when another new Greek signing, Konstantinos Karetsas, had to be substituted. Concerns are high within the club.
In the 23rd minute of the match at Signal Iduna Park, the Greek winger suddenly collapsed to the ground without any opposing player involved. He had just completed a seemingly normal dribble and played a pass. He then raised his arm, signaling for medical attention.
Mats Hummels, an expert for Prime Video and a club icon at Dortmund, expressed his concern: "When the doctors weren't looking at his legs, but were only focused on his upper body, it sent a chill down my spine. You wouldn't wish such a situation on anyone. Those were very worrying images that we had to witness."
Karetsas has since been taken to the hospital. BVB announced that he complained of "circulatory problems." However, the Black and Yellows were able to provide some initial reassurance: "Kosta is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances." Further examinations will now follow.
Bad Luck: Current Injury Concerns at BVB
A lengthy absence for Karetsas would be a significant blow to BVB. New signing Giannis Konstantelias had already torn his cruciate ligament in his first Bundesliga appearance against HSV on the opening day and will be out for an extended period.
Ethan Nwaneri from FC Arsenal was brought in on short notice before the end of the transfer window as a replacement for Konstantelias. Nwaneri was substituted on for Karetsas on Tuesday.
Dortmund is also currently facing injury concerns in defense. Head coach Niko Kovac had to do without Nico Schlotterbeck, Emre Can, and Filippo Mane in the duel against Villarreal.
Ramy Bensebaini is also nursing a bruised ribcage, but would have been ineligible to play anyway due to his red card from the match against Atalanta Bergamo (1:4) in February.
