Roy Hodgson Makes Comeback at 78, Takes Over Bristol City
English coaching icon Roy Hodgson, at the age of 78, is making another return to football management. The former England national team coach has been appointed at Championship club Bristol City, succeeding ex-Cologne manager Gerhard Struber. His contract runs until the end of the current season.
This marks Hodgson's 23rd professional club appointment, having previously managed Bristol City between 1980 and 1982. His most recent role was with Premier League side Crystal Palace, from which he resigned in 2024 following a health scare.
"I've had very good discussions with the board and I'm very much looking forward to contributing until the end of the season. We will get straight to work and aim for a strong performance on Good Friday," Hodgson stated after his appointment as interim manager.
Hodgson Tasked with Securing Bristol City's Championship Status
The "Robins" currently sit 16th in the Championship with seven league matches remaining. While a playoff push is now out of reach, Bristol City holds a 12-point advantage over the relegation zone. Austrian coach Struber joined the club last summer, having previously been dismissed by 1. FC Köln during their promotion bid in Germany's 2. Bundesliga.
Hodgson began his illustrious coaching career in 1976 with Halmstads BK in Sweden, before his first stint at Bristol. His extensive career includes managing national teams such as Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, Finland, and England, as well as renowned club sides like Inter Milan and Liverpool.
