Roberto Mancini Returns as Italy National Team Coach

Italy, the four-time World Cup champions, is entering a new phase of its tumultuous restructuring. Following an extensive and dramatic search for a new manager, Roberto Mancini has been confirmed as the new, and indeed old, national team coach. The Italian Football Federation's President, Giovanni Malago, made the announcement on Tuesday, stating, "I am convinced that Mancini is the right person for the coaching role."

Mancini previously led the "Squadra Azzurra" from 2018 to 2023, guiding them to the European Championship title in 2021. His recent experience includes a brief stint as the national coach of Saudi Arabia and a tenure with Al-Sadd in Qatar until June, after which he was without a club.

Before the focus shifted back to Mancini, Italy's efforts to secure star coaches like Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti (for the Brazil national team) proved unsuccessful. The alternative candidate, Andrea Pirlo, was deemed unsuitable due to his collaboration with a Russian betting company.

Giorgio Chiellini Declines Sporting Director Role

In the aftermath of the failed pursuit of Pirlo, the sporting directors Paolo Maldini and Leonardo, who were appointed only two weeks prior, resigned. The federation president, Giovanni Malago, who has been in his position for just over a month, faces a significant challenge. The newspaper "Gazzetta" commented, "Italy must be rebuilt."

The search for a coach has been accompanied by public disagreements between Sports Minister Andrea Abodi and Malago. Abodi criticized the federation chief, suggesting he presented an "unsightly figure," to which Malago retorted that not everyone is in a position to judge the mistakes of others.

Claudio Ranieri has now been appointed as the Technical Director, succeeding Maldini, as confirmed by Malago. Initially, former national player Giorgio Chiellini was considered for the role, but he expressed no interest. Chiellini stated, "I want to clarify that I am happy with my role at Juventus and wish to support Giovanni Carnevali in his function." The former long-serving defender, who amassed 117 international caps and captained Italy to their Euro 2021 victory under Mancini, is an economics graduate and works as a manager for his former club, Juventus Turin.
