Ole Werner Declines Lucrative Saudi Offer, Opts for Break
Ole Werner, who was dismissed from RB Leipzig in the summer, has rejected a highly lucrative offer from Al-Ahli. Instead of following his compatriot Matthias Jaissle, Werner intends to take a break from football.
Jaissle stepped down from Al-Ahli last Thursday, with his sights set on Newcastle United in England. Al-Ahli, whom Jaissle had recently led to third place in the Saudi Pro League, has been searching for a new coach since then.
The club reportedly approached Ole Werner. However, according to Bild, Werner has declined the offer. His reason: following his abrupt departure from Leipzig, the timing simply isn't right. This is despite the fact that he could have practically tripled his salary, earning around eleven million euros.
Werner prefers to take a hiatus from coaching for the time being, particularly after the surprising nature of his exit from Leipzig. He was dismissed without his knowledge while on his summer vacation in Malaysia.
Al-Ahli Faces Challenges in Finding a New Coach
The German is just the latest coach Al-Ahli has failed to secure for the upcoming season, following several others, notably Spaniards Xavi Hernandez and Marcelino.
The new season officially kicks off on August 13th with a match against Al-Diriyah on the opening day of the Saudi Roshn League.
Al-Ahli is aiming for the Saudi Arabian league title, a trophy that has been absent from their cabinet since 2016, and also intends to defend their AFC Champions League Elite title, which the club has won in the past two seasons.
