Nico Schlotterbeck Contract Extension: BVB's Lars Ricken Reacts to Denial
Borussia Dortmund's managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, has expressed understanding for Nico Schlotterbeck's recent statements and reaffirmed the club's commitment to securing a contract extension with the national player.
Ricken commented on the situation, stating, "Nico's statements are understandable. We haven't confirmed any breakthrough or agreement, so it was the recent media reporting that surprised us more."
Schlotterbeck had previously publicly denied a media report suggesting he was on the verge of signing a new contract with BVB. "To be honest, I have to clearly deny that. We are unfortunately not that far along," Schlotterbeck explained after Germany's 2-1 victory. He added that he was "very surprised by the reporting," particularly since Sebastian Kehl, with whom he had previously been negotiating, was no longer at the club. Schlotterbeck's current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2027, with an extension until 2031 having been rumored.
Post-Kehl Departure: Schlotterbeck Now Negotiates with Book at BVB
Sporting director Sebastian Kehl, who was one of Schlotterbeck's primary contacts for negotiations, was dismissed on March 22nd. The following day, Ole Book was named as his successor, joining from SV Elversberg. Schlotterbeck indicated that he would now likely discuss his future with both Book and Ricken.
Ricken reiterated the "trusting dialogue" maintained with Schlotterbeck and his management. "Our fundamental position, which is to tie him to BVB long-term, has not changed. We continue to work towards that goal," the managing director for sport affirmed.
