Moritz Wesemann Crowned European Champion Again in Diving
Diver Moritz Wesemann has successfully defended his 1m springboard title at the European Swimming Championships in Paris, bringing home Germany's first gold medal of the event.
The 24-year-old from Halle achieved his second consecutive European Championship title on Saturday evening with an impressive score of 431.45 points. This victory followed shortly after the synchronized diving pair of Pauline Pfeif and Elena Wassen secured the German team's first medal of the championships, a silver.
"I am extremely happy," Wesemann stated. "Especially because I managed to complete my dives without any major mistakes, was able to showcase a highlight at the end, and transformed the courage I seemed to lack on the board yesterday into this result today."
Wesemann had previously claimed the title last year at the European Diving Championships in Belek, Turkey. In Paris, he replicated his triumph, leaving Great Britain's Jack Laugher (418.25 points) and Jordan Houlden (410.30 points) in second and third place respectively.
The start of the European Championships did not go entirely to plan for Wesemann. Following several mistakes, Wesemann, alongside Pauline Pfeif, Lena Hentschel, and Jaden Eikermann, had to settle for seventh place in the mixed team event on Friday.
Wesemann has another opportunity to secure a medal on Wednesday in the individual 3m springboard competition.
